Protein Please (review)

Protein Bars with Yogurt

Sometimes I think I’m the most fabulous planner in the world. There are those days where I have a healthy lunch all packed and ready to go, hot tea in a thermos, and fruit in a bag…but I have to admit, that I feel like a lot of the time…I’m NOT that fabulous “put together” gal and I’m scrambling last minute for ANYTHING to eat before I die.

You know I can be dramatic…but personally, hunger pains just aren’t fun…and when I don’t plan ahead, I sometimes settle for something less than healthy. Come on, I know that some of you get me!

That’s why I’m always eager to try out new protein bars or healthy snack foods. It’s something I don’t have to think about or can leave in my car or purse…and it’s there to save me.

Premier Protein sent me some of their protein bars (and new CRISP bars), as well as some of their protein drinks to review…which made me really happy. With my height and activity level, I have a really hard time getting in the amount of protein I’m supposed to have every day. I’m telling you, any opportunity for a little extra protein is a good thing.

Premier Protein Goodies

(A box of goodies…)

There protein bars are hefty weight and BIG – with 30 grams of protein per bar! YET, they only have 8g of sugar and fat. Some protein or snack bars (which will remain unnamed) I’ve tried are just recipes for a sugar high with crazy amounts of sugar (and often fat!). Those kind of bars sure taste yummy, but in my opinion, are just like a candy bar with a little protein added. That’s why I was pretty impressed with nutritional stats of these babies.

Premier Protein Bars

The only thing I’m not crazy about is the fact they run from 25-26g of carbs…which isn’t too bad, but I like to keep things a little lower on the carb side (personally). However, they are BIG bars…so honestly, I’d probably eat half a bar at a time anyway. They are also quite high in calories (up to 290), but again, I treat these bars more like a meal replacement on the go, rather than a snack (unless I have half the bar).

The FLAVOURS:

Premier Protein Bars with Greek Yogurt is such a good snack

One of my favourite healthy desserts that is ridiculously simple (and PACKED with protein) is this:

Take 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt and toss in 1/2 protein bar (crumbled). Mmmm…so good. My favourite bar for this is the chocolate peanut butter. It’s like a healthy Reeses yogurt (EVEN better when put in the freezer for 45 minutes – like frozen yogurt!). It’s a great post-workout snack.

The Crisp protein bar line is equally delicious – gluten free – no artificial flavours or colours – includes 7g of fibre per bar. It’s also lighter in calories, running up to 200 cals at most, and 15g of protein.

The FLAVOURS:

I love Protein Drinks

Last, but not least…they have their shake line. I tried the chocolate and the vanilla.

Why I liked it:

  • Only 160 calories (with vitamins/minerals added)
  • 1 gram of sugar and low in fat
  • 30 grams of protein
  • SO easy for a breakfast on the go (I’m going on a trip soon and I’m TOTALLY taking these along instead of those flimsy hotel breakfasts)
  • Taste pretty good (just make sure to shake it!)

Premier Protein Shakes

I had the chocolate one this morning after my run. Served cold, it was so refreshing…

Premier Protein Love

So yup, I really like this stuff. Convenience always is a huge winner for me and if it can help get more protein in my system, I’m good to go!

Do you get enough protein? Have you tried Premier Protein?

There are so many great sources of portable, convenient protein out there that it’s so nice when you find one you like AND tastes great!

  2. Danielle @ itsaharleyyylife

I would’ve never thought of putting a granola bar on top of yogurt.. yummy!

  3. lindsay

YUM! I have yet to try this protein. and the bars sound great. only 8 grams sugar?! yes please!

  4. Debbie @ Live from La Quinta

I’m not usually too worried about getting enough protein (its not hard), but I like to carry a bar around for hunger emergencies :-)

  5. shannonmarie (rawdorable)

I usually carry raw vegan bars in my purse for emergencies, but my hubby buys protein bars and drinks like the ones in your post. They are right up his alley.

I have been using the shakes for some time and love them. I love to mix the vanilla with a banana and ice in my Ninja blender, it is yummy! You are right about the bears, they are better by the half, too much to have one all at one time. The ONLY Premier shake I don’t care for are the strawberry flavor. It didn’t have very good taste although it is just as filing.

  7. Shaunacy

I love these! I add PB2 to them or flavorded stevia drops to change up the taste.

  8. Charissa

Shaunacy, that is such a good idea! Love powdered PB!
