To Tan or Not to Tan

Sunshine 01

A couple weeks ago LoveTrueNatural sent me some all natural self-tanning products to try out. Honestly, I was a little nervous about it.

The first time I used self-tanner (almost 10 years ago) was a disaster. I was a teenager and I found some leftover tan towlettes in the bathroom. There was a family Christmas party that night and I thought it’d be fun to try. Stupid.

Word of wisdom: Don’t randomly self-tan in the middle of winter – when you’ve never done it before – much less on the night of a party.

I had no idea how to use it, but I was of the opinion that more is better. At the party, the “tan” darkened until my cousins wondered what was wrong with me and why were the palms of my hands orange (oh, you’re supposed to wash your hands after?). Well, I wasn’t a delightful golden tan like I expected. I was orange. I looked like I had rolled in a bag of Dorito chips. Let’s just say I was the source of amusement that evening as I got more and more orange.

So now you can imagine my trepidation about trying self-tanner again, years later…that, as well as the fact that I just like to be outside and get a real tan. You know, one that doesn’t make me look like an Oompa Loompa.

I would never use a tanner that used chemicals. That totally frightens me. I like to use natural products/makeup…and I do not want any creepy elements absorbed into my skin. No thanks.

Enter this…

Self Tanner 01

I never thought I’d say this, but I like self-tanner. Well, this kind. It’s even good for you and has antioxidants in it like organic cupuacu butter, organic green tea extract and organic aloe vera…sounds good to me, although I have no idea what cupuacu is. Sounds healthy.

It also smells quite nice because of the essential oils…none of that nasty chemical smell.

What I liked best about it is the colour. It looks exactly like the colour I normally tan. This is where the major thumbs up come in. Nor did the colour streak.

Here’s a before and after photo of me after using it on my face for just two days.

Before and after tan 01

So it’s quite light, but just gives you that healthy glowing look. Of course, you can build the tan up as much as you want, but I just wanted a hint of colour. I found it also really moisturized my skin.

Excuse the photos, the “before” pic was taken right after a workout and the “after” pic was taken probably 40 times, because I was trying to get a picture where I didn’t look so tired. Well, that’s as good as it got.

I’m one of those people that think a light tan is healthy (baking in the sun and burning is NOT – everything in moderation). However, I think it’s really nice to have this product on hand on days when I look like my “before” picture. People have asked me if I’m ill….because I can tend to look really pale…which I don’t really appreciate.

Self tanner 02

….Anyway, I’m really happy with these products and it was really fun to try. Hope you enjoyed the review…because if you did…you can come back tomorrow when I’m doing a giveaway for one of these self-tanners. Yay! Lots of fun stuff going on around here.

Have you ever self-tanned? Do you think it’s better to self tan or tan in the sun?

I don’t do the self tanner either and I rarely tan anymore in the sun from all the skin cancer fears! And like you said, chemicals on my skin don’t sound fun either. Thanks for the review of this product! I will think about it now!

    Definitely worth a try!

Oh. I like this! My poor legs need help all year round, including these summer…silly Scottish blood in me. I’ll be back for the give away tomorrow!

I have most definitely experienced the “orange” glow from too much self tanner. More was always better in my book, but never turned out natural!! I used to use tanning beds a lot, but have stayed away from them for a while now. I also worry about chemicals added into self tanners, but this stuff looks great!!

I’ve never used a self tanner, I’m latina, so I have a bit of a natural tan. I have thought about using one for my face. I usually put a higher spf on my face than the rest of my body, so it’s really light in comparison.

I’ve had such self tanner nightmares yet I’m still addicted to it. In 8th grade I decided to use it and I didn’t shake the bottle properly and it ended out going on my legs spotty! And then last week I did it again and it got all over my arms (I only put it on my legs) and randomly on spots on my face.

haha I guess I’m impatient and don’t let it dry enough!

I love Jergens natural glow for just a hint of color. But have been getting freaked out about chemicals lately so haven’t been using it. These sound like pretty good alternatives. Thanks for the post.

Thanks for this review. I’d like to try this self tanner. I have occasionally used self tanner, but I really don’t like the chemicals either. It would be nice to have a natural product that works.

Wow! I am impressed hun! Great results!

I don’t like tanning beds, but I would use this!

Interesting! Well, I am glad to hear that there’s a more healthy option out there. I don’t lay out in the sun, obsessing about getting a deep dark tan, and I don’t do self-tanners because I’m allergic to the DHA (I presume…it’s been years since I last used it but it makes my skin blister). Anyway, great review and you look great!

I’ve had bad self tanner experiences, too, which is why I haven’t tried one in years. Looks like they’ve come a long way. Love that this is natural.

BTW, you look beautiful in those pics :-)
