Tips on Organizing Your Fridge

I think the fridge reveals a lot about the health of a person. It also can reveal how organized a person is. To me, when a fridge is not tidy…it actually disgusts me. When I see sticky residue on the shelves and little bits of leftovers in tiny containers all over the place and almost done condiments everywhere…gahhh, let’s just say…it’s a little pet peeve of mine.

Thankfully, we keep our fridge nice and tidy. Every day I will thoroughly check the fridge to make sure that leftovers get eaten and not pushed to the back. I don’t like things to be wasted.

Our fridge isn’t always sparkling, but we do try to keep things clean and in their place. When our fridge is just cleaned and organized…it sounds odd, but I find it more motivating to eat healthy. I love to showcase the vegetables on the main shelves. A healthy fridge needs to have lots of produce!

…So I thought I’d share just a few tips on fridge organization…drawing from how we like to keep our fridge tidy.

Organize your fridge feature 01

When it comes to the drawers of the fridge, we keep one for veggies and one for fruits. I love having oranges and grapefruit chilled! Whenever we start cutting veggies or fruits in half, we stick it in a clear baggie and toss it back into the appropriate drawer. This keeps us from wasting our produce as we always use the stuff in baggies FIRST!

Extra veggies will go on the shelf above along with taller food items. We also keep our almond milk there.

In the small food drawer (top) is where we keep protein like turkey bacon, shredded cheese, deli meat, or hard-boiled eggs.

The top shelf has smaller food items like almond butter, yogurts, egg whites, cheese, and usually leftovers. We try to keep leftovers in clear (preferably glass) containers so we can SEE what’s there. Otherwise it can easily be forgotten and uneaten.

The middle shelf isn’t very tall, so we keep our egg cartons and bouillon seasonings there.

As for our fridge door…

It’s all about the condiments, baby! On the top we also keep our butter and cream cheese. The bottom shelf is big enough to hold some dairy products like milk and cream as well.

Onto the freezer…

Organize your freezer 01

We keep containers with labels to keep things in their place. One for frozen veggies, frozen fruits, and nuts/flours. In the picture above, you can see this is where we keep our almond pulp leftover from making almond milk (after we dehydrate it). We’ll grind it up later and use it for a flour replacement.

The basket is just a place for our yeast, seeds, frozen baked goods, and ice-cube trays. Really…it’s just a bunch of this and that. Not the super-organized spot, but it’s such a small area it’s still easy to see what’s there.

Hope you enjoyed this post and it inspires you to keep your fridge all healthy and organized! Oh, and while we’re on the topic of fridges…you HAVE HAVE to check out this youtube video! It’s by one of my favourite comedians, Brian Regan. He always makes my day!

I have a chronic “buy too many frozen veggies” problem. My fridge is ALWAYS organized. It drives me crazy if it’s not. But the freezer? There’s too many things in there. It’s usually a question of whether or not I’m going to get the door closed or not. I’m jealous of yours!

Yikes, you would definitely be disgusted by mine… I seriously need to clean it out!

That’s true, someones fridge tells a lot about that person. My family’s fridge is much messier than yours partially because everyone in my family eats different things so there’s a huge pile of stuff in there. I shall print out those pictures and keep them as an inspiration for when I get a place of my own :D

This post has totally inspired me to clean my fridge. I will admit that we’re guilty of leaving leftovers in there too long.

Wow! Nice post and lovely clean fridge…. I am so completely a control freak when it comes to the fridge. I have to be the one to put things in there after grocery shopping so that I can wipe a bit and KNOW exactly where things are going, and rotate a bit, if necessary.

I hate to see sticky things or messy produce drawers in the fridge. It seems dirty and unhealthy to me!

I don’t keep milk on the door though… I would be afraid it is not quite cold enough, but that is just me.

    Thanks for the great post.

You impress me. :) Can you come do my fridge now?

Great tips! I was just thinking this morninig how I need to organize my fridge. Sadly, this is not something I do very often. It is a bit messy, as we are a family of 5 and not everyone eats “clean” like me.

I hate when leftovers go to waste. I actually plan out what I eat based on what will go bad first and what stays fresh the longest. I organize my fridge that way, too.

Checked out the clip. Too funny :-)

I love your fridge, it looks spacious and everything looks easy to find. My fridge needs more organization and space. Since I’ve been wanting to organize it for so long, I think i’ll finally do it!
