I rarely make recipes with them because I love the simplicity of eating them just as they are.<\/p>\n<p>However, it&#8217;s a different story with the cherries in our backyard. We had a bountiful supply of Nanking cherries this year and we weren&#8217;t sure what<!--more--> to do with them all. Then we poured the juice and pulp into ice-cube trays, froze them, and put them into baggies. I did a little research on the health benefits of this particular variety. According to a study (published in the 2013 edition of the <em>American Diabetics Association\u2019s journal,<\/em> <i>Diabetes), <\/i>the Nanking cherry can help regulate thyroid hormones and manage metabolism related problems increasing its cellular energy expenditure. Check it out <a title=\"Sour cherry health benefits\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.ca\/2015\/02\/27\/tart-cherries-benefits_n_6763756.html\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>!<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-6069\" alt=\"Nanking Cherry Smoothie Recipe\" src=\"https:\/\/www.colourfulpalate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Nanking-Cherry-Smoothie-Recipe-510x340.jpg\" width=\"510\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.colourfulpalate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Nanking-Cherry-Smoothie-Recipe-510x340.jpg 510w, https:\/\/www.colourfulpalate.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Nanking-Cherry-Smoothie-Recipe-1024x682.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 510px) 100vw, 510px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Please note, this recipe can be made with fresh cherries (just don&#8217;t forget to pit them!).<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"recipeTitle\">Nanking Cherry Smoothie<\/h2>\n<ol class=\"recipe\">\n<li>4-6 cherry &#8220;cubes&#8221;<\/li>\n<li>Handful strawberries, frozen<\/li>\n<li>1 cup almond milk<\/li>\n<li>Pinch sea salt*<\/li>\n<li>1\/2-1 tsp. pure vanilla<\/li>\n<li>Stevia to taste<\/li>\n<li>1\/2 tsp. glucomannan (opt)<\/li>\n<li>1 scoop protein powder<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>*I use Himalayan <a title=\"Himilayan pink salt\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1MSr8rw\" target=\"_blank\">pink salt<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re using <a title=\"Gluconmannan\" href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/1Jqt2AI\" target=\"_blank\">glucomannan<\/a> (a natural thickener made from the konjac root which makes it &#8220;creamier&#8221;, and is also a fabulous natural source of fibre), blend everything except the protein powder.
