Rachel with DoTerra

As part of my Colourful People feature, I’m so excited to introduce you to Rachel! This gal is kind of amazing! One of my New Year resolutions was to learn more about essential oils and how to use them. That’s when Rachel came into my life. I think I will be bombarding her with questions for the next year as I learn the art of oils. She is a beautiful, inspiring woman of God and a successful business woman…I’m thrilled to be able to share some of her secrets, tips, and tricks with you!

1. What started your passion for essential oils and what’s one of your favourite ways to use them?

I had been introduced to essential oils while attending the Nevada School of Massage Therapy to become a Massage Therapist. I had basically only thought of them as tools to use during spa services to add some nice-smelling aroma. Five years later, my Husband and best friend Joe, was suddenly hospitalized and diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. We were told that this was an incurable disease and that he’d be on medication for the rest of his life. We began searching for anything that might help him with his horrible symptoms that had left him bed bound. The medication and doctor recommendations were not helping and his health was further declining.

In 2011 a neighbor introduced us to a company called doTERRA and their Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade essential oils and essential oil based products. We started using the oils throughout the day internally (which I had never ever heard of doing), topically, and aromatically. The change within just a couple of months as far as my Husband’s health was an incredible victory that we had not expected. We dropped everything we were doing and decided we HAD to share our story with everyone who would listen and wanted to help out as many people as we could.

One of my very favorite ways to use our doTERRA essential oils is in my drinking water. My favorite combination is 3 drops sweet fennel and 3 drops lemon in a glass of filtered water. This is wonderful for daily detoxing, better digestion, hormonal issues, weight loss, and so much more! Plus it tastes great!

2. What is one your secrets to starting your own business?

We completely changed our lifestyle so that we had no way to back out once we started. It was this or nothing. I think that doing it this way and making it so that we could both work full time to build our business has made all the difference in our determination and motivation levels.

3. Do you have a favourite beauty secret?

I think what foods/drinks you choose to put inside your body and what products you choose to expose your body to make all the difference for overall natural beauty! I always recommend the Beauty Detox Solution and nutritional tips from Kimberly Snyder. I also replaced my entire makeup collection and all of my hygiene products for much safer ones (including lots of homemade essential oil based goodies).

4. Your favourite go-to meal?

This is a hard one! I have two. First, a couple of organic bananas. During the year of 2012 we stuck to a vegan diet and I fell in love with this perfect fruit. So good for you, nature’s original fast food, filling, satisfying, and makes me feel great! Second, soups! We’ve been making an abundance of all different types of soups for months now since it’s been chilly. I especially love quinoa and veggie based soups, lentil soups, and recently fell back in love with homemade chicken and pasta soups. All organic and local when possible!

5. Favourite way to work out?

I enjoy running anywhere from 1-6 miles at a time with my Vibrams on and doing toning workouts from the Tone It Up girls! I’ve also been using a stair stepper a lot inside since it’s been colder – works the booty good! :)

6. What’s your secret to a happy and fulfilled life?

The biggest thing that has brought both Joe and I an unheard of amount of happiness and peace has been getting to know the Lord. Secondly, to always think about how grateful I am for everything in my life. I used to be fairly materialistic and would be disappointed when I realized there were still so many things I desperately wanted and didn’t have. After we started our business we actually sold most everything we owned and wanted to live off of a very small budget. After my Husband had made his miraculous recovery we really had our life put into a different perspective. We were delighted with all of the time we had to spend together in great health and fell in love with all of the good and free pleasures that God has provided for this life!

7. For the last question, I’d LOVE it if you could share your story on how you came to know the Lord.

It is so obvious to both my Husband and I that his sickness was a total blessing. Not only did we learn how to take care of our health but we were given the best gift either of us will ever receive: true understanding and belief in our Lord Jesus Christ!

I had attended church sporadically during my youth and also went to different Young Life meetings and camps. We would all have silent prayer time and I remember feeling so out of place because it seemed that all of the other children had a relationship with God and I just did not feel it!

Soon after my Husband became ill I had a massage client gift me a Bible. We were at “rock bottom” at that point. My Husband had to quit his job and I just felt like our life was falling apart…which it was in all the right ways! I felt so helpless and didn’t know what to do or how to help him. It was then that I had actually gotten down on my knees for the first time and pleaded in tears with God to help make Joe better. I started reading some from my new Bible – especially scripture having to do with marriage. I would, little by little, share some of the things I was learning with Joe. He always liked what I shared with him but never went out of his way to read on his own at that point because he was brand new to the story of Jesus. This continued while I began to grow in my faith. In early 2012 Joe really started to peak an interest in the Gospel. He was starting to get a better idea from everything I had been sharing with him. He started watching YouTube videos of different people singing and rapping about the Lord. I think it was then he realized that a lot of people he could relate to had a relationship with Him. His faith then began to grow like wildfire.

Rachel and her hubbie

We’re now both so very passionate about the Lord and spend time daily seeking Him and growing our relationship with Him. We love to watch movies and listen to audio online from the Bible. Joe got his own Bible and now we enjoy sitting in bed together and reading and sharing what we’re learning. We also found a global church community from a church based in Seattle called Mars Hill. Pastor Mark speaks in such a way that we are eager to listen to his sermons.

Watching the Lord work through Joe has built up my faith immensely! Also, we feel that being able to serve others by sharing holistic health and our story was just what God had planned for us. I love that we’ve been able to grow in our faith together…strengthening and growing our marriage into what God has intended for us.

Thank you so much, Rachel…for being so open and sweet to share your story! And if any of you are interested in trying her essential oils, you can get them here or follow her on Twitter for more info.
